About the artwork

Presenting the Research On Site
The primary exhibition of the initial phase of the project, inspired by “Akiyama Kiko,” marks the inception of scientific inquiry into historical materials. Centered on the pioneering settlement of “Shimizugawara,” it draws upon Suzuki Bokushi’s writings and illustrations. Through panels and videos (accessible via QR codes on smartphones), the exhibition delves into research on the fluctuation of the Nakatsugawa River, its correlation with infectious diseases such as smallpox, local weather patterns, and the water cycle. Supplementary exhibitions at the Yukihisa Isobe Memorial Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art[SoKo] in the Nakasato area offer visitors the opportunity to engage with “Before the Rain” from diverse perspectives.
