Echigo-Tsumari Art Field

Welcome Shizuka, rice planting, and biotope observation at Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art

posted May 15, 2017
Shizuka, a goat of Museum of Picture Book Art will return to the museum with three kids! Join us welcome them back home and rice planting as well as nature observation at biotope.
Biotope in Germany stands for "a place where creatures live". By providing continuous maintenance, we aim to build an environment embracing diverse creatures to live. The pond and rice field we cultivated in 2014 welcomed fireflies and killifish are happily swimming sharing the pond with various kinds of flogs. We run a regular observation session every season at the same time so that we will learn how the biotope evolves.

1. Bring back the rice field which was once here.

A small patch of rice field in the biotope follows how the agriculture was done (by hands) in the past under the guidance of local people. Rice planting, weeding, and harvesting are all done by hands and we use old tools called "Tomi" and "Momi-suri" made of Wooden mortar for threshing and hulling respectively. Rice ball using rice dried under the sun taste so good. Join us to the whole process begining from the rice planting.
