Adel Abdessemed visited Echigo-Tsumari in preparation for ETAT2018

2018 TRIENNALEPosted : March 25, 2018

We were excited to welcome Adel Abdessemed to Echigo-Tsumari who will be creating a new artwork for the upcoming Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018. Born in Algeria, Abdessemed is an internatinoally acclaimed artist currently based in Paris, France who works in a broad range of media including drawing, video, photography, performance, and sculpture. He has presented provocative artworks in exhibitions across the world including "Headbutt" 2012, square of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, a gigantic bronze sculpture capturing Zinedine Zidane headbutting Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World Cup Soccer.

He visited Echigo-Tsumari for the first time last Autumn in preparation for participating in the ETAT2018.

He walked around Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art KINARE and other places nearby. When asked the impression of Echigo-Tsumari, he told us he feld the robust strength of the nature from mountains and flowers he saw and heavy rainfalls he experienced during the visit. "It was as if the nature and humans were fighting each other"

After walking around the region, he came into the cafe and made an espresso coffee for himself and staff members. He was very charming while he must have been thinking quietly in his head what to create for the festival. We are looking forward to seeing what kind of artworks he will be bringing to Echigo-Tsumari this summer.
