(1) Autumn for new rice: Enjoy freshly harvested new rice


Matsudai Nohbutai / Satoyama Food Festa 2020 featuring new rice in autumn

Enjoy autumn flavours with freshly harvested new rice such as “tonjiru set (pork miso soup with vegetables)” at Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo or “Autumn BBQ with new rice” in the outdoor tent overlooking “The Rice Field” by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. New rice from the terraced rice field is available to purchase as souvenir.

Stop by for seasonal lunch featuring Tsumari Pork (JPY1700) or autumn vegetables (JPY1500), for a cup of tea or enjoy artworks by potters.

This special exhibition features various artworks by TASHIMA Seizo, ranging from rare works to newly created ones for the exhibition. These artworks are also for sale.

"Be free as you like!!" / "The Sound of Bamboo Played by the Wind" at Museum of Picture Book Art

Special exhibition “Be free as you like‼” 
The first special exhibition for the eleventh year at Museum of Picture Book Art features MATSUMOTO Michiko. Suffered from schizophrenia in 2000, the artist has been drawing a couple of thousands “Hoppe”, a beloved pet cat who rescued her from suffering. The colourful and precise patterns drawn without draft stays in your memory once seen and every expression of the cat captured is adorable. The exhibition will enable you to appreciate MATSUMOTO’s world view and make you feel you are surrounded by the cat as you walk throughout the museum.

Special exhibition “The Sound of Bamboo Played by the Wind”
The other special exhibition taking place simultaneously welcomes MATSUMOTO Akinori who makes sound objects playing beautiful tunes using bamboo. He will make artworks on site at the museum which plays sounds as wind blows. The ever-changing shadows of the sound objects and overlapping of sounds made by chance spread like a story inside and outside of the museum.

China House "Time Travel" at NUNAGAWA Campus

Artworks by young Chinese artists responding to the theme, “time”, are presented in the former classroom.

Hong Kong House "Still Life Objects"・Echigo-Tsumari Kamigo Clove Theatre

Hong Kong House presents artworks under the theme of “something to calm mind” by L-sub, an artist unit based in Hong Kong. Visitors will be invited to share experience through their works. Echigo-Tsumari Kamigo Clove Theatre, adjecent to the Hong Kong House will be open including the theatre space.

"Amazing Insects" / "The Secret of Beech Tree Forest in Satoyama" at Kyororo

Jumping, swimming and chirping – the exhibition highlights diversity of local insects in Matsunoyama area from the perspective of their amazing and distinctive features.

Gallery Yuyama, "Real Peacefulness" featuring Motozono Shiho

The artist creates artworks travelling in time from past, present to future which are filled with humour and irony as they make reference to something familiar to himself, social themes such as history and politics as well as quotations of art history.

Yukihisa Isobe Memorial Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art

As a permanent exhibition of 2020, the museum presents a solo exhibition of ISOBE Yukihisa.

Check out suggested itineraries before your visit and help plan your journey to enjoy autumn leaves as you explore artworks.

★Nakasato to Tsunan Area
The journey begins from Kiyotsukyo Tunnel and includes special lunch at Katakuri House (booking required).

★Tokamachi to Kawanishi Area
The itinerary takes you to KINARE, Museum of Picture Book and House of Light. Lunch at Ubusuna House.

★Matsudai to Matsunoyama Area
Explore Bijinbayashi (beech tree forest), visit “The Last Class” and enjoy lunch or BBQ at Matusai Nohbutai

(4) Official guided tour


We are pleased to start operation of the officil guided tours which take participants to a day trip on bus to trace 20-year history of ETAT after suspending the operation during the pandemic.

(5) Stay overnight at artworks


Make use of “Go To Campaign” and stay at artworks which have renovated abandoned houses and closed schools.

"Dream House" by Marina Abramovic (Matsunoyama Area)

Dream House”, an artwork to dream a dream by Marina Abramovic, created in an old minka house. Guests participate in the art project through putting on pajamas designed by the artist, sleeping in rooms in four different colours and writing down dreams in the diary.

Australia House (Matsunoyama Area)

Australia House was designed by Andrew Burns Architect, the winner of the international architectural competition under the theme of “small, robust and reasonable”, head judged by ANDO Tadao, has been a platform for exchanges between Australia and Echigo-Tsumari.

Katakuru House (Tsunan Area)

Katakuri House is an accommodation of the renovation of the old wooden elementary school building stands in Akiyamago, one of the best 100 unexplored regions in Japan. Katakuri House opens for lunch this autumn as well as staying overnight.
