Echigo-Tsumari: Day trip guided bus tour including lunch

※In order to make the tour more enjoyable for people from all regions, we have decided to cancel the tour for the dates of July 24 to August 22. We will wait for the declaration to be lifted and then operate the tour. We will continue to make preparations for “Echigo-Tsumari this year” tour so that the tour will be fully prepared.

This is a day-trip guided bus tour starting and finishing at Echigo-Yuzawa station (90 minutes from Tokyo station by shinkansen), enjoyable for people visiting Echigo-Tsumari for the first time or wishing to explore alone. The tour will show participants highlights of ETAT which is staged in the vast area of the region. We will stop at Ubusuna House in Gannyu village for lunch, filled with local ingredients grown and cooked by the locals.

Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET)
Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE has renewed most of its permanent collections for this summer. Part of the building has also been re-done as it changes its name into Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET). Enjoy the newly re-opened MonET which offers lots to see and do.

12:00-12:50 Enjoy special lunch prepared by locals in the old minka house with thatched roof
Ubusuna House
This Echigo-Chumon-Zukuri minak house with thatched roof (traditional house structure distinctively found in this snow region) has been revived by potteries. It has turned into a restaurant and gallery with cooking stove, basin, bath as well as plates and bowls made by leading Japanese potters on the ground floor whereas upstairs consist of tea rooms as gallery space exhibiting other pottery works. These artworks, the thatched roof old minka house and most of all, local people welcoming visitors have been key elements of making Ubusuna House a popular destination in Echigo-Tsumari. Enjoy lunch filled with local ingredients prepared by people living in the village.

13:30-14:20 Immerse yourself into “walk-in- palette” museum
Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art
Tashima Seizo, a picture book artists known for his masterpiece such as “Chikarataro” has transformed the entire closed school building into a museum of picture books. Inside the wooden school building exhibits objects made of drift wood pieces. As you walk through corridor to class rooms, you can follow stories of the three children featured in the picture book who were once students of this school. The resident goat families will also look forward to seeing you on the school ground.

14:40‐15:25 Check out reborn Matsudai Nohbutai
Matsudai Nohbutai
Matsudai Nohbutai will be transformed into a facility which introduces the activities of nature and human through collections of artworks called “Kabakovs’ Dream” by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. Enjoy these new works in the museum as well as artworks outdoor which are dotted around in the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, the area known as Joyama adjacent to Matsudai Nohbutai.

“For Lots of Lost Windows” by UTSUMI Akiko
Located at about 15 minutes drive from Kiyotsukyo Tunnel, this artwork standing outside invites you to look out of the window frame in order to re-appreciate the landscape of Echigo-Tsumari. The waving curtain shows us wind that blows through the window.

16:10-17:00 The entire tunnel has become an artworks
“Tunnel of Light” by Ma Yangson and MAD Architects
It has been re-opened with a new artwork of black and white stripes covering the interior space installed in the second lookout in the tunnel. Enjoy the breath-taking view in one of the most popular site in the region, Kiyotsukyo Tunnel.
