Participant in the tour will stay at Sansho House, meet locals, and experience distinctive rituals including Torioi and Dondoyaki wishing for the good harvest of the new year. You will also enjoy the feast for the new year and making chinkoro, a traditional small doll.

Sansho House is a closed primary school transformed into an accommodation in time for the ETAT2006. Participants in the tour will stay overnight in this unique accmmodation standing on top of the hill in the village.

Come down to the dining room after dropping off your bags. Join making mochi and enjoy the taste of joint-effort!

Play in the school yard covered with snow
School yard adjecent to Sansho House is the perfect spot to play in snow. You may like to borrow different equipments to play in snow available at Sansho House.
15:00-16:00 Lucky charm of Tokamachi-city
Make your own winter lucky charm
Chinkoro is a traditional lucky charm in a puppy shape which has been made locally in the region since Edo period. It get cracks after completion which is an evidence of it protecting you from disasters. Join making your own chinkoro with local villagers.
16:30-18:00 Koshogatsu rituals
Participate in the traditional rituals for Koshogatsu
"Torioi" is a ritual for Koshogatsu wishing for a good harvest of the year by scaring birds away. Learn songs from local people and join a parade walking through the village singing along!

Enjoy Yukimigozen
Yukimigozen is a meal taking inspiration from a traditional meal once served in each village for weddings and funerals. Enjoy a deliciously cooked meal by local villagers served on lacker plates and bowls.

Participate in Dondoyaki, another Koshogatsu ritual of the community
"Dondoyaki" is another Koshogatsu ritual wishing for a good harvest and a peaceful year without problems. You can watch how local people bring lucky charms of previous years and caligraphies and put them into the fire as a part of the ritual.

The last meal of the tour at Matsudai History Museum
Try light meal including "Anbo" a traditional food of the region and soup in the 140-year-old Keyaki minka house. You may enjoy wonderful memories of the two-day tour as you sit around the irori (sunken hearth).

Notes to the tour participants
※ We will inform you when your booking is confirmed with the detailed itinerary and the list of things to bring.
※ The tour includes many programs to enjoy the snow. Please make sure to bring warm clothes, layers ,and a pair of rain boots.
※ We will have to change or cancel some parts of the itineraries due to the weather and/or road conditions.
※ While the itinerary takes into consideration of time it may take for travelling on snowy roads, we recommend you to book a return Shinkansen that departs not immediately after the tour finishing time to avoid missing a train back to Tokyo.
