In an era in which a regional sense of value has been swamped by globalisation and in which all becomes homogenised and optimised, we will stage an exhibition and musical performances to examine the role of examine the role of architecture and the power of art. On the 7th festival, we begin our journey with the Hojo, in which Kamo-no-Chomei attempts to see the world from a four-and-half-mat hut; the Gogoan, in which Ryokan creates a diverse range of works; and Ihatov, the imagined utopia of Kenji Miyazawa.
Fifty selected site-specific artworks for the anthropocene are presented in Echigo-Tsumari, where humans have co-existed with nature and developed a way of life described as ‘satoyama.’.
As the festival develops stronger ties with other art festivals, a network being built through art is expanding beyond national, as other countries and institutions abroad set up satellite bases in Echigo-Tsumari.
Echigo-Tsumari is a place where nature and humans have co-existed for 5000 years. This exhibition will feature primitive artworks such as the Lascaux and Altamira cave paintings and present the way of life of the people who created them..
Designed by architect, Hiroshi Hara, the building was opened in 2003 as a place for exchange people, products and information. In conjunction with the ETAT2012, it was re-opened as Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE. The museum serves as a gateway to the Echigo-Tsumari region with artworks inspired and representing topography, history, villages, fields, closed schools and abandoned houses, and food. to detail
Matsudai Nohbutai is a few minutes walk from Matsudai station on the Hokuhoku Line. The gymnasium of a former Kiyotsukyo primary school has been tranformed into a space of gallery and warehouse of artworks. The opening exhibition "four artists: materials and hands" is launched in conjenction with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015. The rest of the school building serves as an information centre as well as a platform for "Kiyotsuya" - a food project operated by a joint team between Tokyo Denki University and Kyoritsu Women's university during ETAT2015. to detail
Kamigo Junior High School closed in 2012 re-opens as a base for performing arts. This is a resident, space for practice and stage to present performances. Artists stays and lead satoyama life-style and learn through collaboration with local people and complete their performances.
