Marginal Art in Satoyama vol.3

A special exhibition by Yuji Ueno, a budding flower artist, who produce artworks with the theme of flower. After being excommunicated by Sogetsu style, he has begun an activity of original flower arrangment called "hanaike". Challenging it may appear from the traditional Ikebana viewpoint, he has been collaborated with different professions. He finds that the planting flowers on the street in the Echigo-Tsumari region is like graffiti art which draw painting in public space. Based in the gallery space, he will also explore the villages and produce artworks. (curated by art critic, Ren Fukuzumi)

Born in 1967 in Kyoto. Spent time in Kagoshima, reside in Tokyo. Began to learn flower arrangment in 1988 after encountering avant garde style of flower arrangement by Hiroshi Teshigawara. In addition to exhibitions across Japan, he has expanded his stage for activities abroad including Bali island, burn-down sites, and events. Since 2005 he began live performance called "hanaike" at Gallery Maki in Tokyo and has continued and developed to present flower arrangements using flowers and materials reflecting histories and memories of the place. His style of performance - consists of creation and destruction is supported by people from diverse areas. He has collaborated with poets, photographers, musicians, and craftsman.

Ueno will be everywhere executing "hanaike" in the Echigo-Tsumari region. What kinds of new artworks will be created through his expeditions and encounters with local villagers?

Climb Akibayama in Koarato Village
Following a traditional ritual by local villagers to climb Akibayama on 29 April, Ueno will climb up the mountain.

Set up Yorishiro at Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE
Approximately one-hour performance of improvizing "flower arrangement" using wooden pieces, scrap wood and other materials found in the Echigo-Tsumari region in the center courtyard of the museum. Enjoy performance from corridor space on the ground floor or over the window of Dining Bar Echigo-Shinanogawa.
