Australia House, meant to be a Japan-Australia meeting place, was completely destroyed in the northern Nagano Prefecture earthquake of March last year. The present house, designed by the winning architect in a competition in which Tadao Ando served as the head of the jury, met the requirements to be low-cost, compact and sturdy. It presents a view of the architecture of the future as well as symbolizing recovery from the earthquake.
