[Sept. 19–Nov. 30] Echigo-Tsumari New Rice Fair

Summary

Enjoy the bounty of the autumn countryside by eating and buying fresh rice

Echigo-Tsumari is in the midst of a bountiful autumn. Once again, the season for new-crop rice has arrived. In Echigo-Tsumari, with its vast rice paddies, rice is not only a staple of daily meals but also a vital part of the region’s satoyama landscape and way of life.
To celebrate the new rice season, “New Rice Fairs” will be held at various venues throughout Echigo-Tsumari. Enjoy this year’s rice at each location—whether through lunch featuring freshly cooked new rice, rice balls, shopping for new rice and side dishes to accompany it, or workshops where you can experience the autumn satoyama. Each venue will also distribute leaflets summarizing the joys and challenges of farming, based on interviews with farmers in Echigo-Tsumari.
