Satoyama rice: blessing from rice field - A special exhibition at Kyororo

posted September 2, 2016

Rice production is a core industry of Tokamachi-city. Local people have developed and nurtured biodiversity in the distinctive satoyama environment through continuous production of rice on the rerraced rice field. The ecosystem services of terraced rice field have flourished life of local people and played a significant role in tourism. However, the rice production in satoyama has been facing challenges as ageing and depopulation proceed, the price of rice continues to drop and rice consumption decreases. Discontinued rice production in Satoyama would lead to the dissapearance of nature conservation, local culture, and eocsystem services. The exhibition aims to bring attentions and contribute to deeper understanding of the rice production in satoyama amongst local people and visitors by featuring diverse effects of rice production in the region, their influence upon local lifestyle and indispensable benefits they have brought to the region.
