Under the theme of "exchange between city and the region" this is a cultural facility to discover and promote local assets. Visitors can experience culture and lifestyle of snow country through local delicacies, shopping, events and workshop. Matsudai area of Tokamachi city is mostly mountains and known for heavy snowfall in winter. Throughout over 1000 years of human history, people in this region have been negotiating with nature. Cultivating rice field on the slope of mountains (terraced rice field), changing river flow to create rice field (segaeda), planting trees after mudslide - the way the locals have co-existed with nature is called "satoyama". Matsudai Nohbutai is a field museum for promoting such distinctive lifestyle in snow country offering local delicacies at Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo, local products and souveniors at a museum shops and artworks to explore. The bulding itself which wasdesigned by Dutch architect, MVRDV, is an artwork and interior spaces host artworks by other artists.
There are approximately 40 artworks dotted around Matsudai Nohbutai including Joyama area. Visitors can explore the area and see artworks by Japanese and international artists on foot.
Don't forget to explore the building itself - which are full of wonders and surprises of artworks by different artists. Visit observation deck to see a complete work by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov or use toilet to see if you can find a way out!
