人形浄瑠璃文楽座技芸員。「木偶舎」主催。高校の頃から人形を扱い、1952年文楽の世界に飛び込む。二世桐竹勘十郎（人間国宝・故人）に入門。各地で自然との融合や他ジャンルの音楽・演劇との接点を求めた文楽人形の可能性を追求し、劇場の枠を越えた独自の野外劇場を企画・演出している。また、文楽の新作の脚本・演出も手掛け、話題を呼ぶ。
