About the artwork

The artists’ works were exhibited in an antique shop named “Usagiya” in Tokamachi. Both artists used natural dyes extracted from plants native to the Tsumari region in their pieces. Denkichi Omi used silk cloth woven in Tokamachi, dyed it with Akane (madder), and drew patterns on it with a piece of wood. Through this piece, Omi expresses feelings of admiration toward the earth of Tsumari. Alannala Lau’s works include a series of five paintings of plants titled “Earth,” “Water,” “Fire,” “Wind,” and “Occult,” as well as bags titled “Impulse.” Lau believes that adding elements of beauty to everyday objects is a means to enhance the quality of life.
