About the artwork

When an insect grows from a pupa into an imago, its cells dissolve and reform. This is why the pupa represents the concept of rebirth in Ancient China. Also to bring new life to the empty classroom, the artist closed all light off to create an installation filled with countless pupa. The objects were made in the form of actual pupa using resin kneaded with fluorescent pigments. Pupae emerge into butterflies between the middle of the night and dawn, and this piece captures the pupa glowing brightly in the darkness just before they are reborn.
