About the artwork

In 2006, scarecrows from Fukagawa Museum Road Shopping Street Cooperative Society in Tokyo came, as brides, to marry into the terraced rice fields in Joyama. This time the children born of the Echigo-Tsumari and Fukugawa scarecrows have come to Matsudai. In 2006 it was only scarecrows from Fukugawa which were on display but this time local people also participated in the creation of the scarecrows. Ninety-four unique scarecrows were born from materials brought from everybody’s houses. Visitors were seen inadvertently smiling at these children, born from the connection between Fukugawa and Matsudai.
