About the artwork

Where is the border dividing city and countryside, dividing inside and outside of a community? Two earthen staircases-an up staircase in the city area and a down staircase in a remote community-appeared. They suggest entrance to and exit from the city area and the community. Urban people are oriented toward rising, and look up as they walk. On the other had, people in the village, who cherish rice paddies, live a life looking at the earth. The two staircases symbolize the directions of the eyes of people.
