The large-scale installation The Last Class, which has been displayed throughout the former Higashikawa Elementary School since 2006, is joined by the new work Shadow Theater. Projected onto the classroom walls emerging from the darkness are the shadows of creatures traversing the boundary between life and death: skeletons, bats, angels.Fantastical and humorous, it resembles children’s play. Yet these creatures dancing amidst light and shadow also hint at “death, which universally comes to all.” This piece stands as one of the artist’s signature works, continuing to express the life and death of anonymous individuals and groups.
