About the artwork

The Tsumari-yaki project was launched to revitalize pottery in Echigo-Tsumari, where many pieces that Japan is known for have been unearthed. People were encouraged nationwide to submit earthenware made from the soil of Echigo-Tsumari. The soil of Tsumari used is virgin soil, just as extracted. The people making submissions carried out the whole process, starting from making the clay, through trial and error. This is the first open juried exhibition of pottery on the theme “Earth.” Thirty-five pieces have been chosen from 140 entries for the display. The three winning entries were those that showcased the tones of Tsumari earth in their clay or glaze, or in their expression.
