E63: Takeshi Kobayashi: Symphonic Suite “Beyond the Circle” based on “the flow of the river is ceaseless” by Minao Shibata

Summary

【Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018 Opening Concert】An alternative note of hope in transitoriness

A unprecedented performance will be brought to open the epoch-making art festival, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale by Takeshi Kobayashi. “Beyond the Circle” presents an alternative world of music which is composed of originally-arranged orchestra, sang along by various singers with distinctive voices. Kobayashi has composed this new symphonic suite consisting of eight movements, taking an inspiration from “the flow of the river is ceaseless” by Minao Shibata, a musician and composer who had a great influence on Japanese music scene.

Kobayashi said:
“When I re-visited music composed by Minao Shibata, I found the existance of something like “catalyst”. While he was a genius when expressing his inspirations, he was also a music intellectual who were able to consider music in relativity such as Japan vs Europe or Japan vs Asia. I believe that “the flow of the river is ceaseless was a “journey” through music that he explored. “A journey of intellect” which was traced by our ancestors like Chomei Kamono.”

In fact, it is said that “the flow of the river is ceaseless” celebrating Showa 50 (1975) was composed in order for the musician existed in the middle of the 20th century to recollect the musical experience he had had. As the title implies, the text of songs for the music is based upon “Hojoki” by Chomei Kamono. As known to everyone, “Hojoki” is a realistic snapshop of the Japanese society then when people were filled with concerns about natural disasters took place at the end of the 12th century.

“Although we are entering to the era when we co-exist with AI, we are also reminded how powerless we were in front of the nature such as the Great Eastern Earthquake in 2011. I think what Chomei Kamono felt and Minao Shibata then took over to reflect onto the symphony in the realm of “transitoriness” has passed onto me. Fram Kitagawa, who has encouraged me to present this performance at the stage of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is also one of the people who passed the baton to me. My piece of symphonic suite is like a journal of journey which resonates with the baton which has been passed down.

The “transitoriness” which has been around from ancient time will be re-interpreted and presented as a contemporary symphony with spectacular images. Be a audience to experience the art of intellectual journey.
