Snowshoeing toward Matsudai Castle

Summary

Snowshoeing toward Matsudai Castle

Why not venture out to the snowbound Field Museum wearing snowshoes, the perfect gear for walking on snow? The experience of stepping through deep, powdery snow is uniquely winter. Walking through a pristine white world untouched by footprints feels like having the satoyama all to yourself.Your destination is Matsudai Castle, enveloped in a winter wonderland. You’ll see a completely different side of it, filled with quiet and crisp air, unlike its appearance from spring through autumn. If the weather cooperates, the panoramic view of the surrounding hills from the castle is exceptional. The landscape woven by the silver-white earth and the vast sky is a luxurious sight unique to this season.

Concurrently Held Special Exhibitions

"Matsudai NOHBUTAI Field Museum Special Exhibition: Tetsuro Kano "Sinking into the Mountains, Floating in the Valleys"

This is an attempt to extend the summer-to-autumn exhibition “Ambiguous Maps, Clear Territories” into winter, when the natural territory of snow expands. Through workshops, we will add protective snow fences to existing artworks. After snowfall, we will partially excavate these “snow-buried artworks” and jointly view them alongside newly installed “snow-floating artworks.”The artist installs this work as “a kind of trap to draw attention to and contemplate things easily overlooked in our everyday field of vision.” The way the “territories” of plants, animals, and humans become temporarily visible amidst the overwhelming snow will be an experience unique to this location.
