This tour takes participants to masterpieces created during the first phase of ETAT. Large-scale installations occupying a closed school and abandoned house by Christian Boltanski and Chiharu Shiota who are presenting solo retrospective shows in Tokyo, in particular, are must-see. Artworks with ★ are exclusively open to tour participants.

For Lots of Lost Windows(2006)

The artist created a large window frame in the landscape with hanging curtain dancing to the breeze - which is not imposing on nature. It stands quietly like a blooming flower, showing her respect to the nature.

POTEMKIN (2003)

Architectural Office Casagrande & Rintala transformed the dumping site into a park as a part of public renovation project. Tyers and spade remind us of the industrial waste which were once dominated this place.

Set North for Japan (74°33’2”)

【※From bus window】The artist brought the real-size structure of his house in London to Echigo-Tsumari. The artwork attempts to connect two places far apart with different cultures in one point on the world.

The Last Class (2006)

An installation cominating the entire space of the closed school by Christian Boltanski and Jean Kalman.

House Memory (2009) ★

A web of black yarn filling inside of an abandoned house from floor to ceiling. What captured in the web is not only memories of the house, bus also stuff that were pre-loved, no longer used but can't be disposed.

Matsudai Nohbutai (2003)

Designed by MVRDV, Matsudai Nohbutai has restaurant, gallery space and piloti. About 40 artworks are dotted around in the Joyama area behind the building.

Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shoku

A restaurant in Matsudai Nohbutai serving dishes featuring local seasonal produce in buffet style. Enjoy landscape reflected onto the mirror surface of the table as well as Satoyama landscape.

Hoshitoge terraced rice field

About 200 of large and small terraced rice fields spread like fish scale, which water surface reflects landscape. It is also known for sea of clouds which attract many visitors and photographers.

Shedding House ★ (2006)

Junichi Kurakake and his team spent two years and curved the entire surface from floor to beam to ceiling of an abondoned firm house. It is open to the public as an accommodation.

The human re-entering nature(0

A human-shaped 4m tall panel with the artist figures printed onto it, changing how it looks by different seasons. The pillow is in the shape of "human" in chinese character wishing for more people to the village.

Inagohabitambo (2003)

Inago (grass-hopper) shaped slide made of china installed in the midst of the rice field, inviting visitors to feel the surrounding nature. "Habitambo" is a word combinig "habitat" and "tambo (rice field)" combined.

KINARE (2012)

Echig-Tsuari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE re-opened its door as a hub of ETAT in 2012 with permanent collections including a new one by Leandro Erich in 2018. Mole TV will be aird from 12-14 Aug 2019.

Mudmen (2006)

A small rest hut standing by the river, consisting of shapes of every local villager then which are made of mud-concrete as material which includes mud collected from the place.
