About the artwork

The central piece is entitled Staircase to Memory, or Self, Climbing to the Ground through Time. Two sacred trees (a yamaboshi and a beech) are suspended on a platform six meters in the air. A long stairway leads to them. To the senses, it feels as if a shrine has been created. At the four corners of the park are four installations related to the Gamo district and this particular site (allegories created by my encounters with the directions; east: wisteria flowers; west: nails; south: birds; north: meteorites). Thus I summon an invisible world to this site. The park is a miniature of space; the inner world of the park is a microcosm. The living things in the garden carry on the work of creation.
