About the artwork

Hanging hina are decorations made of pieces of old clothes and tied together into a bundle with thread. They are hung during Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival) and used to pray for the health, longevity, and prosperity of children. Roughly the same number of hanging hina as the number of residents in Gejo are displayed in miniature and actual sizes in a tatami room.
