About the artwork

Over the artist’s site had once flowed first the sea and then the Shinano River. What is now a deep valley was carved out over long months and years by the water’s flow, distinctly carving out the upheaving stratum from the cliff. 3000 pinwheels following along the line of this formation evoke the drama of the earth’s creation. Arranged along the natural lines of the earth’s layers exposed, the rotation of the pinwheels in six different colors recalls the water that once flowed along the stratum.
