About the artwork

A retrospective of works spanning 60 years by artist Taeko Tomiyama who, since the end of the Second World War, has dealt with themes such as coal mining, war responsibility, and the third world. The artist describes her own work as “‘narrative art’ that uses modern Asian history as the vertical thread, and weaves it together with a variety of events from different ages using the horizontal thread . . . which, over the course of 30 years, may have evolved into an epic world.” During the exhibition period, illustrated stories were performed with musical accompaniment (198p). [Performance: Yuji Takahashi, Ayuo, Reki Shibata]
