About the artwork

Since the early 1970s, photographs became an integrated part of the works by Boltanski. The artist focused on the structure and appeal power that the photograph as media embodies and sublimate them into artworks. For this work, the artist uses black and white photographs of people in Echigo-Tsumari (which will be printed large on net-like fabric and hung in the forest), letting the belongings of people disappear while trying to express the new soul in the forest. The artwork which makes the eyes in the photographs look at viewers reflects the philosophy of Boltanski – that is to draw viewers into the work.
