About the artwork

A hurdle used in horse jumping and a tennis court: Dodge’s references to European upper-class sports, throught their discordance with the setting, speak to the state of Japan, overflowing with imported culture. A tennis tournament was actually held here; the players wore uniforms designed by Dodge.
