About the artwork

The Myokayama Photo Studio opened in 2006, and during the Triennial, memorial photographs of visitors were taken there. The artist feels that sitting for one’s own memorial photograph is an act of self-affirmation. People of all ages—from under one year to 90—participated, and many sat for their photograph together with their family. During the Triennial, an exhibition titled “Beautiful Garden” was also held. The idea to open a caf? was generated through the ongoing activities that began in 2006, and the new “Myokayama Caf?” was established in the grounds of the former Myokayama Primary School.
