About the artwork

Our laboratory presented a plan for the broad concrete ditch beside the Wakamatsu-en Sports shop. Naturally enough, it involved a deepening engagement with water. Our interest in how color and scenery are reflected in water as time and space was based in our sensibility and sensual experience. The colored water in 50 cc test tubes made a statement itself, but, more than that, was a connection to the colors of the scenery reflected in the water. Although the relationship between the color of the stainless steel sheet installed at the bottom of the ditch and the water’s surface was meant to strengthen the reflections from the water, the water kept getting muddier, and the effect we had expected did not occur. The dirty water spoke to us of the power of nature. Only the water’s surface remained unchanged. We still don’t know what the ditch was for. With that added in, all in all, it was a mysterious experience.
