About the artwork

I continues the barter trade I began at the previous Triennial. The Shimonunokawa Community Center was my bases for operations and my installation as I interacted with local residents for 40 days. I visited the homes of local residents or was visited by them and met many other visitors as well. The installation The Room of Memory is created from my three years’ experience pedding and bartering. The room is a gloomy space with light blocked by a snow fence. So I printed photographs of nature and the people of the area on transparent film and stretched it across the windows. In the center of the room, I set up seventy-two 340-centimeter Japanese cedar logs in the shape of a jungle gym, and projected the waters of the Nunokawa River on the ceiling. I wanted visitors to experience what it might be like to live in a house buried in snow, calling up old memories and remembering spring and summer.
