About the artwork

From the Sea of Japan to the Shinano River, then to the Sabaishi River, the artists traced the seashore and rivers from Niigata City to Echigo-Tsumari, picking up driftwood. The 30 tons of driftwood they collected crystallized into a column with an absolute sense of mass. The work ripened over time and through various encounters during the course of driftwood collecting, and became a space that in some way resembled warm sunshine. The artists plan to work with community people to turn the work into charcoal and return it to the soil of Echigo-Tsumari.
