About the artwork

The soil under our feet varies in color from one small area to another. 750 kinds of soil gathered from all over Niigata Prefecture were exhibited in the old house to demonstrate the beauty of soil for its own sake and to express the history of the land and the diversity of the world. Many visitors were so surprised by the color variation of the soil, which was spread out over the entire second floor, that they breathed deep sighs of admiration. Niigata is a land with rich water, which makes fragments of rocks become diversified soils.
