About the artwork

A small shop that was once the area’s only general store was also a place for people to gather and relax while drinking tea. The sentences on the wall were resurrected from the memories of the inhabitants of the Shimonunokawa region. Thoughts regarding life in the old days, everyday habits and customs, feelings toward nature, expressed in the local dialect, were carved into pieces of wood. One of the boats in the center of the room was filled with objects representing the accumulation of time. From the other boat, filled with discarded pieces of plaster casts, could be heard voices of the villagers picked up by hidden microphones.
