About the artwork

We installed 10 CD players in white boxes at equal intervals along both sides of a 30-meter stretch of Matsudai’s main commercial street. They played voices of children at play, the sounds of the local train, animal cries, and other sounds in a series, the sounds moving from one speaker to the next as through flowing in response to a signal. It was almost as through the sounds were running around the shopping area. The sounds of children playing and other emotionally significant sounds flooded the area, evoking local residents’ memories of past generations, the history of the area, and their hopes for its future. By extension, our aim was to strengthen their sense of identification with the sopping area and with Matsudai as a whole and to unify and reinforce their awareness of the region.
