About the artwork

Yet, it is true that I often make images. But, there in the Kiyotsukyo valley, rather than making or using images, I deeply felt like bringing the visitors, and more specifically the villagers, to “think” about reality. I did not want to give them another version of their environment. I borrowed some obsessive and mighty words about space. When I returned in spring, some inhabitants from Nakasato Village have accepted to read and to interpret this text. Their voices were played in the pedestrian tunnel when the visitor comes out with the impressive view of the torrent and the surrounding gorge. It has been our way of celebrating “hanami”.To solemnize this moment we had shared together, I gave to each of the fourteen readers a ‘hand-made’ artist book, with their portraits and the text they read. This space which owns us and that we own it only as much as our eyes can pass over it, which wearies us, scares us, challenges us, pursues us.
