About the artwork

Against a green background, three concrete masts sport sails that flap in the wind, like a sailing ship that has descended on this rural hillside. Sailing ships symbolize travel and have been the means of contact between countries over the centuries. For Japan, with its history of seclusion from the world, the Western-style sailing ship is also a symbol of its own opening to the Other. The faces of people of many countries are painted on the sails. Each sail is a movie or theater poster, and these posters, which have traveled in various countries, are taking a brief rest on a hillside in Matsudai.
