About the artwork

In the evening, lights appear in the abandoned Sansho Primary School. The artist created illuminated objects along with current students of the Matsunoyama Primary School as well as students who had graduated from the now-abandoned primary school. The materials included disused everyday items as well as garbage. These were collected from around Echigo-Tsumari as well as donated by the local villagers. The light art pieces illuminate the hallways, stairwells, and pool of the old school. The workshop was televised nationwide in its entirety on the NHK program, “Himitsu-no-Chikaland.” [Project coordinator = NHK “Himitsu-no-Chikaland.”]
