The former Shimizu Primary School opened as a hub of inter-local art network centre in 2009 under the direction of Kawamata Tadashi. Since then, Kawamata has closely engaged with the centre and it has evolved to be the archive/library facility. In addition to the new work, the facility will be utilised to be a library of the documents of ETAT, information on regional art projects, and art-related books and catalogues including approximately 30,000 collections of books donated by Nakahara Yusuke, an art critic. Inside the building, Kawamata will present site-specific archives. It also preserves the entire documentation of all the previous iterations of ETAT as well as documentation of his activities from 1980 to 2005, which are available for viewing. Also for the first time, Kawamata’s base of operation will be built on the upper floor in the former gymnasium space which will be open to the public as an atelier gallery. The gallery will present models including ones from the past projects and documentation of his activities both in Japan and abroad.
