About the artwork

This is a “limousine” stall, stretched out from the normal 1.5 meter length to 10 meters. We set out to create a small “public space” by tearing down the common image of a stall. Although Tokamachi is noted for heavy snowfalls in winter, at the summer Triennials audiences cannot see the snow. So we created a space where people could think of the snow, by painting the stall white and preparing a menu composed of white local specialties such as sake, tofu, cracked ice, and pickles. The stall operated at Triennial event sites and at the town festival, and it was hired out as well. Moving the stall created a bit of a sensation and caused a little traffic congestion because it blocked four lanes to turn a corner, but onlookers took kindly to the funny-looking sight. White, big, troublesome, but laughable . . .; a bit like the snow in Tokamachi.
