About the artwork

This project units individuals by having them tie together pieces they had made : 20cm squares white cloths. The goal is to create links between individuals, worlds, eras (generations, from children to the elderly). Once tied together, the cloths become part of the natural beauty of Echigo-Tsumari. Hard work by the Kohebi-tai, together with the collaboration of local people, resulted in the tying together of 12,215 cloths, a most impressive event. The majority where made by local old women, with many children also contributing. The people and the region were tied together through the wonderful power of Kohebi-tai.
