About the artwork

Fixtures lain out on the floor and structures hung at odd angles throw off one’s sense of equilibrium. The 150 old wooden doors used as materials were collected from all around the Tsumari region. Originally serving as sliding doors in private homes, the fixtures, representing the diversity in daily life, take on a variety of forms. In this region, the dirt floor section of a house is referred to as “garden.” The intent of the work is have visitors experience with their bodies the spatial quality of this region, represented by the “garden” and wooden doors. “I would be pleased if visitors leave with a physical memory that ‘I was here, in this region.’” (Sotaro Yamamoto)
