The Kitagawa Fram School is a program designed to explore the background of regional art festivals.

Continuing from the previous session, “Kitagawa Fram School: A Cross-Sectional Study of Art Festivals” will feature talks by experts in various fields related to art festivals, while also introducing initiatives not only from the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field” but also from other regional art festivals (such as the “Setouchi International Art Festival” and the “Oku-Noto International Art Festival”).

For this session of the Kitagawa Fram School, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Kan Miyake—an artist participating in the “Boso International Art Festival: Art × Mix 2027,” which will take place starting next March—as our guest speaker. In addition, Director Kitagawa will provide an overview of the art festival.

Guest Profile

Kan Miyake
Born in Takasaki City in 1983. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University in 2006; currently serves as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University. He creates massive murals using paper clay and Styrofoam, and in 2016, he won the Grand Prize at the Taro Okamoto Award. His artistic practice spans a wide range of media, including sculpture, painting, picture books, costume design, video, and performance art.

Kitagawa Fram

Born in 1946 in Takada City, Niigata Prefecture (now Joetsu City). Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts (History of Buddhist Sculpture).In 1982, he founded Art Front Gallery Co., Ltd. His major curatorial projects include the “Antoni Gaudí Exhibition,” the “No to Apartheid! International Art Exhibition,” and the “Fare Tachikawa Art Project.” As part of his efforts to foster community development through art, he has served as the general director of events such as the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale” and the “Setouchi International Art Festival.”

It’s a festival where you can fully immerse yourself in the nature, history, and cuisine of Echigo-Tsumari through art.

[Running on September 13 and October 25] JIKU #013 HOKUHOKU-LINE

"JIKU" is a series of projects that uses light to express the regional axes—as well as the axes of Point of View and history—that have been obscured by urban development and changes in the landscape.This artwork is set at Misashima Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line. Using the tracks of the Hokuhoku Line—which has fostered new connections within the region since its opening in 1997—the artwork expresses the value and energy of connecting one place to another. Lighting installations positioned at the front and rear of a special train illuminate the straight tunnel in sync with sound. This is an experiential artwork that can only be viewed by passengers aboard the special train.
