Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Orchestra 2026

Summary

The barrels sing, and the winnowing fans dance!

The “Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Orchestra,” a community orchestra composed of residents from both within and outside the region, is led by musician Jun Oka and takes its name from the onomatopoeic sound “kapukapu” featured in Kenji Miyazawa’s short fairy tale “The Mountain Ash.”
Using handmade instruments crafted from farming tools and folk implements that had been lying dormant in local warehouses and barns, the ensemble will once again deliver a diverse array of sounds at the Kamigo Clove Theater this year. Please enjoy a performance created collaboratively by professional musicians active on the front lines and the ensemble members.

[Performers] Echigo-Tsumari Kapu-Kapu Orchestra (farm and folk instrument ensemble), Jun Oka (tenor saxophone, flute)
*Information on other professional musicians performing with the ensemble will be announced at a later date.

Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Orchestra

Together with musician Jun Oka, we create instruments using farming tools and folk artifacts found in the local area, and perform music using those instruments. The members were recruited from various regions with the stipulation that “no musical experience is required.” We do not use sheet music during rehearsals; instead, we primarily use vocal cues such as “don-don,” “da-da-ta,” and “kapu-kapu.” Based at the Echigo-Tsumari Kamigo Clove Theatre, we are active year-round.
