Oka Makoto + music Mill Project

Jazz musician (tenor saxophone and flute player). Based in Tokyo metropolitan area, he performs across Japan. In 2013, he launched a project called the Music Mill with the theme of “Collaboration with Nature,” embarking on the creation of waterwheels that produce music. The project received the semi-grand prize at the Kobe Biennale 2013 Music & Art Stage Competition. Since 2014, he has been organising the “Tobigamori Music Mill Festival” in September each year, focusing on kinetic musical devices powered by waterwheels created collaboratively with local residents in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. He rented an abandoned house in the city and established a workshop, continuing to produce and engage in activities under the theme of “music x art x community power” in collaboration with local residents. He has participated in “Nakanojo Biennale 2021” and “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022,” creating works with sound installations using old agricultural and folk tools.
