For families

In the garden of Australia House, there is an artwork called the “Gardening Project.” Several times a year, we work with landscape architects Yutaka Kawaguchi and Kaori Naito—who specialize in large-scale gardens in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture—to maintain the surrounding plantings. While we usually carry out this work with residents of the local Urada district during seasons other than spring and fall, this time we’d like to invite adults from the general public to join us and enjoy creating the garden together.Why not join us for some hands-on work while we chat about gardens, plants, and the differences in vegetation between Kanagawa and Tsumari? Afterward, let’s enjoy some tea and socialize.

*Please note that we expect to be working in extreme heat. We will take frequent breaks throughout the session. Air conditioning is available inside the building, so if you feel unwell at any time, please do not push yourself—just let a staff member know right away.

A Look at the June Landscaping Work

Artwork: Gardening project

This garden artwork was unveiled in 2009 as “The Intersection of Nature and Daily Life.” The artist identified the essence of the relationship between the satoyama way of life—which draws sustenance from nature—and the process by which a garden takes shape, and has continued to nurture the garden while visiting the site regularly ever since. He plans to continue envisioning the garden’s future. He has also designed the gardens for “Australia House” and “Dream House.”

Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science “Kyororo”

A museum dedicated to discovering and showcasing local resources under the theme of “Urban-Rural Exchange.” Approximately 40 artworks are scattered throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces. These works, which draw inspiration from the region’s history, local customs, people, and nature, allow visitors to fully experience the local culture through all five senses. We invite you to enjoy the art and the rural landscape as they change with the seasons.

It’s back again this year! We’re holding the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field Day” at the NUNAGAWA Campus. Everyone is welcome to participate—from children to adults—regardless of nationality, age, or background. Summer Mystery-Solving Field Museum Notebook 2026
— Discover the Mysteries of the Satoyama Through Art —

Visit the artworks and stamp stations scattered throughout the Field Museum and solve the puzzles using keywords related to the satoyama landscape! As you stroll, you’ll encounter artworks by artists from around the world, as well as The Rice Fields, forests, and the insects and flowers that live there.

Let’s make “Kitchen Lithographs" with artist Kinukawa Yasunori, using chocolate, aluminum foil, and coca-cola.

Experience a mysterious printing technique that takes advantage of the repulsion between water and oil, using items found in the kitchen! You can print 2 to 3 sheets using the same plate within the allotted time.

[Akeya] Lecture Program: “Workshop on Developing Mountain-Based Livelihoods”

At Akeyama, we have long served as a “new school for learning the skills necessary for human survival from the mountains,” inviting various experts and artists to host symposiums and workshops. This time, we are inviting Hiroshi Ito, a “nariwai maker,” to lead a workshop where we will explore ways to make a living (nariwai) in the mountains.
