From Friday, March 15, we will begin accepting reservations for accommodations from Saturday, July 13, which falls during the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024” period. Guests can stay at the former wooden schoolhouse Katakuri House and the artworks “Ubusuna House”, “Shedding House”, “Dream House”, and “Australia House”.

Enjoy a unique lodging experience in the Echigo-Tsumari region, where you can enjoy the rich satoyama nature, food, and artwork of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale.


Katakuri House

Katakuri House located in the unexplored Akiyamago, is a former elementary school that looked after local children from 1884 to 1992. The most popular meals are prepared using a variety of seasonal mountain produce gathered from the local area. In addition, the former classrooms have been turned into tatami guest rooms and the school headmaster’s room serves as an onsen. There are many places to experience the great nature, such as playing with “Tsumari Sugoroku” an artwork by Hara Rintaro and Yu in the gymnasium space, the breathtaking “Ishigakida” and “Mikurabashi” which was used as the setting for a movie. You can also enjoy trekking starting from the inn.

Ubusuna House

Ubusuna House is a thatched minka that has been restored with “yakimono” (pottery) and is popular both as a restaurant and as a work of art. You will eat rice prepared with local ingredients by local mothers in irori and vessels created by leading Japanese ceramic artists, and take a Shigarakiyaki bath. After preparing yourself with a Mashikoyaki basin, you will greet the morning in the warmth of an old Minka house. You can enjoy such extraordinary luxury time away from the hustle and bustle of the city in a private setting. An early morning stroll through the village is also recommended.

The Thatched roof old Minka house was transformed into a gallery of Japanese potteries and a restaurant space. This very popular artwork/restaurant is also open for a sleepover. Guests can enjoy meals cooked by local people around the irori created by the master of potteries in Japan, take a bath in the Shigaraki bath, groom in the Mashikoyaki basin, and wake up in the old Minka house. Enjoy the luxury of private time away from the noise of a busy city. We recommend guests take a morning stroll in the charming village.

Shedding House

The entire house, including walls, floors, ceilings, and pillars, was carved out with a carving knife, turning the entire house into a work of art, the “Shedding House. The interior of the old house is covered with black soot from years of living on the hearth and cooking stove. Junichi Kuurakake and volunteers from the sculpture course of Nihon University College of Art completed this 150-year-old house after 3,000 man-hours of labor in about two and a half years, and it is a work of art that has taken an empty house and transformed it into a molten, revitalized house. Please enjoy a rare experience of art and village life in a private guest house that can be rented out in its entirety by friends, families, or groups.

Australia House

Australia House was built in 2012 as a symbol of recovery from the 311 disaster and a testament to the exchange between Echigo-Tsumari and Australia. It is open to the public to stay overnight when not occupied as an artist-in-residence.Visitors can experience staying in the unique architectural space created by the artist, enjoy the artworks and furniture installed inside and outside, and enjoy the perfect location surrounded by abundant nature. Please be sure to take advantage of the Yuta onsen, known as the hot spring of beauty, which is only a 5-minute drive from the hotel.

Dream House

The “Dream House,” an overnight stay experience by Marina Abramovic, was born out of a wish to “dream in order to face oneself” in today’s hectic lifestyle. It was created by renovating a house over 100 years old in a satoyama village in one of Japan’s heaviest snowfall areas. Guests wear pajamas designed by the artist for dreaming, sleep in a bed for dreaming, and in the morning write down their dreams in a “Dream Book,” turning the experience itself into an artwork. Please spend a night of dreaming that you can only do here.

Sansho House|Reservations accepted for groups only

The about 60-year-old wooden school building has been renovated as an accommodation. The former classrooms welcome guests to sleep in. Sansho House is famous for beautiful hearty meals cooked by local villagers. Guests are recommended to take a Matsunoyama onsen (10 minutes drive) known as the three best medicinal baths. There is an outdoor deck space in summer or around the fire stove in winter to relax. Perfect accommodation for a group stay.

For the time being, we are accepting reservations for groups (10 or more persons). We will announce the reservation period and acceptance of reservations for general stay (individual guests) on or after Saturday, 1 Jun.
