The “Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Orchestra,” a community orchestra born out of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Filed, is now recruiting new members. Why not try making instruments out of farm tools and playing them? Since we don’t use sheet music, anyone can join—regardless of musical experience or age.

They engage in a variety of activities, such as crafting and playing musical instruments made from farming tools and folk artifacts found in the local area, as well as participating in events for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Filed.The group is led by musician and artist Jun Oka, and its name is derived from the onomatopoeia featured in Kenji Miyazawa’s short fairy tale “Yamanashi.” Based at the Echigo-Tsumari Kamigo Clove Theatre—a venue for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Filed—the ensemble brings together members of diverse ages and backgrounds from both within and outside the region.

Tenor saxophone and flute player. He made his debut on the jazz scene while attending Hitotsubashi University. In 2013, he launched the “Music Waterwheel Project,” where he creates musical instruments using waterwheels and old farming and household tools. Since 2022, he has been involved with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Filed, creating the permanent artwork “Farming implements as instruments!.” He will participate in the Setouchi International Art Festival 2025.
