About the artwork

The artist expressed the richness of the flora of Tsumari by shaping and carbonizing wood to be symbolic of the mountains and villages of the region. To do so, he had to collect wood from many tree species. He walked around the satoyama area looking for trees with the help of local experts on tree species. Forty species were gathered and burnt into charcoal and ash to recreate new forms. The work is currently on dislay in the Murono community in the Matsudai area.
