A special exhibition at Matsudai Nohbutai: "The Monument of Tolerance" by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov and Snowy Wonderland

Summary

The program offers visitors an opportunity to gain a holistic experience of art, food, and agriculture of satoyama in winter. Visit the newly created artwork by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, “The Monument of Tolerance” standing in the snowy landscape or experience “snow art” to appreciate the potential of snow as a material for artworks, playing with sledge and kamakura (a hut made of snow), and tasting mochi.

1. "The Monument of Torelance" by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov / "Snow Art" by Snow Art Unit Niigata

“The Monument of Tolerance” which stands quietly in satoyama of Matsudai sending a message to the world and “Snow Art” by artists based in Niigata is open to the public in snow. Visitors are invited to walk in the snow to see these artworks.

2. Experience snow country

Try various activities of snow country under the guidance of local people including playing on sledge, making kamakura, and cooking omochi. Free-to- pull bench in the sledge shape will be available to try on site.

① Snow Art by Niigata Unit "Kanjiki Art"

Put on “Kanjiki”, a device for walking on snow, trample the snow, and create beautiful patterns on the snow with their footprints

② Dance for all - FC Echigo-Tsumari

We will create a supporting dance for FC Echigo-Tsumari in time for 2022 season. Players of FC Echigo-Tsumari will perform a comical dance inspired from farming postures and actions.

③ Horikawa Michio and Matsudai Mountai Sledge team presents "Mountain Sledge Festival"

People in the region used to cut timbers from the mountains in winter and transport on sledges through the snow. Visitors can experience riding on the mountain sledge in this festival.
